‘They Cloned Tyrone’ Director Juel Taylor Video Interview On His Film Influences

Aug 20, 2023Aug 20, 2023

Miramax Presents The Film That Lit My Fuse is a Deadline video series that aims to provide an antidote to headlines about industry uncertainty by swinging the conversation back to the creative ambitions, formative influences and inspirations of some of today’s great screen artists.

Every installment asks the same five questions. This week’s subject is Juel Taylor, who makes his feature directing debut on They Cloned Tyrone. The film is a throwback to blaxploitation films like Three The Hard Way, with a touch of sci-fi and the paranoid conspiracy thrillers that proliferated in the 1970s. Starring John Boyega, Jamie Foxx and Teyona Paris, the Netflix film just bowed, and it is a sometimes playful and occasionally frightening mystery in which a young man (Boyega) believes he has somehow been duplicated. Taylor began his trek to the director’s chair with the intention of telling stories through video game creation. Eventually, he found his way into films, co-writing Space Jam: A New Legacy, and Creed II. Watch here to see how an exciting new director voice found his mojo.
